How to Survive a Sick Visit With Your Toddler
Having a sick child is stressful. And when a trip to the pediatrician is necessary, their illness can be even more challenging. Alleviate tensions with our pro tips for surviving a sick visit with your toddler.

Sick visits with young children are often challenging. Toddlers who are under the weather can be extra fussy, restless, and uncomfortable.

But, with some preparation and patience, you can better manage the situation with both you and your child.

Board-certified Pediatricians Tina E. Floy, MD, and Trinidad Rojas, MD, of Wellness Pediatrics, PC in Fairfax, Virginia, have plenty of experience soothing sick toddlers. Here are their best recommendations:

Provide lots of reassurance

During a sick visit, your toddler may feel anxious or scared in an unfamiliar environment. Offer reassurance by holding them close and speaking soothingly. Your presence can provide a sense of security, and your child will feel more at ease with a familiar face nearby.

Bring their favorite comfort items

Pack your toddler's favorite comfort items, such as a blanket, stuffed animal, or special toy, to make the visit less scary. Having these familiar objects can provide comfort and distract them during the wait.

Offer snacks and drinks

Despite our efforts to get you seen as quickly as possible, toddlers can get restless, even during a short wait. Bring some healthy snacks and drinks to keep them occupied and prevent unnecessary fussiness. Choose healthy options like sliced fruit or whole-grain crackers.

Think of entertainment

Prepare for the visit by packing items your toddler finds entertaining. Books, coloring books, or age-appropriate toys are portable things you can slip into your bag. Distractions can help pass the time and keep their minds off feeling unwell.

Keep a record of symptoms

Before your visit, jot down the symptoms your child is experiencing and any questions or concerns you may have. This will help you communicate effectively with the pediatrician and remember all crucial details during the visit.

Listen carefully to the doctors

Having a sick child can be distressing, but it's essential to remain calm and listen carefully to our doctors’ advice and instructions. They will guide you on the best action to help your child recover quickly.

Give lots of praise

Praise your toddler for being brave during the visit, regardless of whether it went smoothly. A small reward or treat can serve as positive reinforcement and make the experience less daunting the next time around.

Consider a televisit

Some issues can be diagnosed and treated via a televisit. TeleVisits allows parents to consult with their child’s pediatrician from home or another location using a smartphone, computer, tablet,  and webcam. Our providers connect with you through HIPAA-compliant video conferencing for a convenient and hassle-free consultation.

Follow our doctors’ recommendations

After the exam, whether in person or online, it’s crucial to follow your pediatrician's recommendations carefully and complete any prescribed treatment. If symptoms don’t start to improve or your child worsens, contact our office again right away.
