Lab Tests Q & A

What are lab tests?

Lab testing is a tool to learn more about how well your child’s organs and systems are working. They’re a routine part of well-child exams, although your child won’t need lab tests at each visit. These tests use a small sample of your child’s blood, skin, urine, or other tissue.

Routine lab testing helps build your child’s permanent medical record. This living document becomes an invaluable resource over time, making it easy to track changes and identify areas of concern.

At Wellness Pediatrics, PC, your child has access to both routine lab testing and targeted diagnostic testing.

What kinds of COVID-19 lab tests are available?

As the nation continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, getting tested is still the best way to know your status. Wellness Pediatrics, PC, offers polymerase chain reaction (PCR) COVID-19 testing.

This test searches for genetic material from the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is the virus responsible for COVID-19. It’s considered the gold standard of COVID-19 testing.

If your child has flu-like symptoms, testing is the only way to know if they have COVID-19. If the screening comes back with a positive result, you should take action to prevent spreading the infection to others in your home and community.

Wellness Pediatrics, PC, also offers COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots for children six months of age and older.

What are some lab tests my child might need during a sick visit?

Lab testing is an important part of acute care, more commonly called sick visits. The ability to quickly determine whether a child is suffering from specific infections empowers practitioners and parents to determine the best way to respond.

Flu testing determines if a child has come down with the flu, and it’s often done in conjunction with COVID-19 testing since the illnesses have similar symptoms. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) testing detects this common and highly contagious illness. The “season” for RSV runs between late fall and late spring.

Rapid strep testing is also a powerful tool in detecting the presence of streptococcus bacteria, the cause of strep throat. These infections can be incredibly painful, and rapid testing helps kids begin treatment right away.

At Wellness Pediatrics, PC, rapid testing can yield results in around 30 minutes.

When the time comes to book lab testing, same-day visits are an option. Call to check the day’s schedule, and remember that online booking is an option for less time-sensitive needs.
